Ah yes Char Kway Teow, one of the most sinful hawker foods in Singapore. It is full of carbs, oily and almost no proteins yet one of the most delicious hawker foods if done right. A simple dish but tests your kungfu cooking skills.
So I went to Blk 409 Ang Mo Kio Market and Food Centre to eat a hidden gem and that is Bendemeer Fresh Cockles Fried Kuay Teow. Heard it has been there for over 9 years!
Bendemeer Fresh Cockles Fried Kway Teow has been cooking it since 1989, previously operating at Bendemeer Road Hawker Centre. What makes their Char Kway Teow unique from others is their special blend fish sauce.
The Char Kuay Teow
This is the 5-dollar version which is the bigger portion. This is the son's version of Char Kway Teow, which I heard the owner is not feeling well.
Their version of Char Kway Teow is the wet version. If you are a fan of tau gay ( bean sprout ), you will definitely like this. They put in a lot, like no need for money. But the other ingredients like fish cake, chinese sausage and blood cockles the quantity is pathetic, like less than 5 pieces per item.
A plus effort is they fried every plate individually.
Not too sweet and salty, with a pretty balance of taste. The smokiness of Wok Hei (wok breathing)is damn strong. The bean sprouts help a lot to reduce the jelakness (overwhelming richness) of this dish.
Thoughts
It is a decent Char Kway Teow but that's it, nothing special. The Wok Hei is the better ones I had for it. The small quantity of other ingredients makes you think twice about buying the large portion.
I will only eat it if I am around the area. Maybe I am lucky to eat the father's version next time.
