Serangoon is probably the most crowded area in northeast Singapore. When a place does have crowded areas, it is bound to have lots of good food and Serangoon fills the criteria.
Serangoon has an ample of old-school hawkers and hipster cafes. I used to visit Chomp Chomp for late-night suppers.
So recently a friend of mine shared with me that there is a hidden gem wanton mee store in Serangoon for many years. Without further ado, I made a trip down for it.
The name of the stall is called Chan's Delight and they have started selling wanton noodles since 1950s.
The Ordered Dish:
Chan's Delight Signature Mee (4.5SGD)
This plate of noodles was filled with ingredients. Chicken feet, boiled wanton, fried dunplings, char siew and vegetables.
Based on these ingredients with the current inflation rate, I am surprised that they are keeping the price at $4.50, while other stalls outside will charge at least $6. The portion of the noodles is huge too.
The noodles are a little bit mushy and slightly overcooked but still acceptable on the texture. Definitely not my type of noodles as I preferred a more springy, firm type.
The mixture of sesame oil, pork lard and chilli coats well with the noodles, elevating the taste of it.
The boiled wantons are pretty flat I would say. The skin was too thick for my liking, making it like I am eating only the skin. The ingredients of the wanton are lean pork and water chestnut, which is good however if they use pork with fats, it will have an additional fragrance on it.
The fried version of dumplings is so much better than the boiled version. It uses the same ingredients but now the skin is crispy but not dry and oily. A lot of wanton mee stalls does good wantons but not the dumplings. This stall was the opposite 😂.
Char Siew was pretty normal. Nothing to shout about.
Thoughts
Chan's delight definitely gives me the old-school wanton mee vibes of it. I love the simple ingredients of the wanton and dumplings, not too complicated. the sauce mixture coats very well with the noodles.
The wanton skin can be done better by either changing the supplier or using a different wrapping method. Noodles can be cooked more firm on it. I did not eat the chicken feet so I can't say much about it.
If you are around Serangoon MRT station or NEX, you can take a 5-minute walk to reach the stall.
Overall, it's a decent wanton noodle with a bang for your buck price. I will recommend the fried dumplings over the wontons instead.
