Kovan hawker centre is one of the oldest hawker centres in the northeast of Singapore. Some of the stalls have been there for more than 10 years and still standing strong. One of the stalls is the famous 30 cents soya bean drinks stall. I grew up eating at this hawker centre.
Davis Prawn Court started operations at the end of 2022. Previously it was a cai png (mixed economic rice) stall which is known for being cheap and delicious.
Davis Prawn Court sells both types of prawn noodles. The left one is the broth version which operates from morning to late afternoon. The right side is the stir fry version of prawn noodles which is handled by the head chef of the previous cai png stall and it operates from afternoon to night. In this post, I will review the broth version.
They have a wide selection of prawn noodles. From what I see on the menu, they are likely to serve the old-school type of prawn noodles. Pork ribs, intestinal and pigtails are a very old sidekick of prawn noodles.
The Ordered Dish
Davis Prawn Court Intestinal prawn noodles (6.80 SGD)
I ordered the dry version with a separate bowl of broth. For my carbs, I chose a combination of yellow noodles and white bee hoon.
The ingredients inside have pig intestines, pork meat, prawns, pork lard, bean sprouts and pig skin garnished with fried shallots.
The noodles and bee hoon are cooked very well with firm bitings of it. Mixing with the chilli, shallots and pork lard, the noodles and bee hoon gave a savoury yet fragrance aftertaste with the tanginess of the chilli. The only thing I would pick something bad for this would be the alkaline taste of the noodles, which is a little bit strong.
The prawns are rather small compared to other stalls, however, it was fresh and they put in the effort by deshell the prawns and poops making it easy to eat.
When eating intestines I am usually afraid if they are not properly cleaned, leaving a poop smell. However, they have done a good job cleaning the intestines. No pooping smell and it was cooked very chewy.
I have eaten quite a lot of prawn mee stalls in Singapore, but this is the first time I see adding boiled pork skin on it. After mixing with the chilli and shallots, it was damn good.
The prawn broth is the heart and soul of prawn noodles. the broth is a strong and rich style, when I drink one spoon of it all the prawn flavours are all in the mouth. It is a very good savoury broth.
Thoughts
Davis prawn court serves a high-tier old-school style of prawn noodles. Pigtails and intestine versions of prawn noodles are getting lesser and lesser due to the handling complexity of both ingredients. They have done a good job handling the intestines.
$6.80 for a prawn noodle tends to be the pricier side, but trust me it was quite a big portion of noodles and the way Davis prawn court is handling its food and ingredients makes it worthwhile.
The alkaline taste of yellow noodles may not suit everyone, but overall it was a bowl of prawn noodles with effort and sincerity. Next time I will try their fried version of prawn noodles.
