What's your preferred breakfast? something light and hearty? Then this kuay teow (rice noodle) soup is the perfect breakfast for you!
This stall has been here for over a decade and is a favourite among the locals. The original owner passed in 2022 due to diabetes and now is over by his son.
The son taking over the stall was not smooth sailing though. According to the video below, he was an ex-banker. Upon hearing of his father's death, he quits his banker job and wanna continue his legacy. His father didn't leave any recipe behind, so he had to start from scratch to find the taste. From his mother's experience and childhood memories, he can replicate around 80 percent for now.
What is so special about their kuay teow soup? It uses old hen chicken, which enhances the broth greatly instead of mixed pork and chicken.
The Ordered Dish
Kuay Teow Soup Small Portion (6.50RM)
Here it is, A bowl of ingredients pack kuay teow soup. Chicken meat, fish and meatballs, fried scallion and spring onions. For the price it does have decent proteins in it.
Unlike Singapore, the kuay teows Malaysia hawkers use are much thinner, which is great for soup. It was cooked on a perfect texture, you will have no problems slurping on it. It was so smooooth, pairing well with the soup.
Look at the soup, it is so clear! This pure old hen chicken soup tastes so light and sweet, truly great for breakfast. It's just pure fragrance and no msg is detected.
When it uses old hens, the tradeoff would be the meat. The texture was rough and not the most delicious chicken breast meat. I can't say much for the "sacrifice" of the using old hens.
The fishballs and meatballs are made from factory type, very generic. But with the kind of price they are selling, guess it's good enough.
Thoughts
If this is only 80% of the original recipe, I can't imagine how good his father made it. Hearty and light, that's what makes a good breakfast. Eating on a roadside stall in the morning feels like travelling back to the 80s. The soup is a worthy one, with the fried scallions, the aromatic is so memorable. If you are travelling there, do have breakfast at this stall at least once.
