Shun Heng Pig Trotter Rice: Tender and flavourful pork trotter in Bedok!

Pig Trotter Rice is relatively new in the Singapore hawker's food scene, which only came out in 2019 (not the vinegar-style pork trotter).

Lin Ji, a sister brand of Bai Nian, started with this dish and made news earlier this year by giving out free pig trotter rice. Their style of pig trotter is from Long Jiang, China which is very famous there.

During these years, lots of stalls tried to ride on the success of Lin Ji by selling pig trotter rice. But most of them failed and Lin Ji dominated it.

Stall selling pig trotter rice

Earlier this year, Shun Heng Pig Trotter Rice started operations in Bedok Hawker Centre, giving an alternate choice for Lin Ji. It is just beside Bedok Mall and their stall is very noticeable.

The Ordered Dish

A plate of pig trotter rice with egg and vegetables

Pig / Pork Trotter Rice (4.9 SGD)

Shun Heng serves an affordable yet enormous Pig Trotter Rice. Half a portion of a braised egg, a spoonful of Chinese sauerkraut and generous portions of pork trotter are inside this plate. Their style is different from Lin Ji's pork trotter rice.

a piece of pork trotter

The meat was so tender and had a smooth texture when biting it. Flavour is right hit on the point where it has sufficient taste but not too much. Braised sauce goes well with the rice. To my surprise, it is not greasy at all!

pork trotter with chilli sauce

If you like chilli sauce with garlic mixture, then you are blessed. Pair it up with the pig trotter to boost more of its fragrance with tangy spiciness.

A spoon of Chinese sauerkraut

I really like their way of handling the Chinese sauerkraut. So crunchy and not mushy. Taste was not overly salty and cleans your taste buds after the pork trotter. Probably the best one I had.

Thoughts

I can't help thinking, "Why is this stall not getting attention?". This is an excellent pig trotter rice! The meat absorbs the flavours damn well and is not overwhelming. They manage to strike the balance, leaving your palate satisfied without that heavy, oily feeling. Chinese sauerkraut texture is perfect, but the portion is small.

If you don't like pig trotters, they do sell pork belly or pork intestine rice too at the same price! Do come down to Bedok Hawker Centre and try their awesome food!
