Hi foodies! I am back after a long break. In the first post of 2024 I will bring you all to JB and eat kuay tiao kia (粿条仔), the JB version of kuay chup.
Taman Tasek Kuay Tiao Kia 南滨园粿条仔 has been selling kway tiao kia for almost 40 years! I was brought by my cousin to eat here with a funny description " Later I bring you to eat lunch under a tree!".
This stall may be unknown among Singaporeans but for JBreans this is widely popular, even mentioning this is probably the best kway tiao kia in JB!
They have a wide pig visceral parts to choose from, some don't even sell in Singapore!
Items ordered
This is the portion of 5 people, which includes a bowl of kuay tiao for each person.
Can you guess what this is? It is a pig's tongue! The first look we thought it was braised pork belly. Taste and texture are like eating pork meat, firm with a slightly salty taste. These innards are not available in Singapore.
This is called Pork Birth Intestine (生肠), which is not available in Singapore too. It has an addicting chewy texture that comes along with the light braised fragrance taste. Must Order!
Pig Stomach, done with perfection. Chewy with no porky smell on it.
You don't see any kuay chup stalls selling sausages in Singapore. Firm bites with a smokey taste.
Kuay tiao is light and herbally with the soup. Pairs well with the innards to balance the taste. I would still prefer the big kuay tiao version from Singapore.
Thoughts
It's a hidden gem indeed. The way they braised their food was light and hearty with a slight herbal fragrance, perfect for a comfort meal. Innards were clean and had no 'poop' smell. Kuay tiao has a smooth texture when eating but is just not my thing, I prefer big kuays.
If you wanna go adventurous, they do sell other parts of pork like pig ear etc. Pig's tongue is recommended. The price is wallet-friendly, with a total price around 60RM for 5 people.
