Tempura Udon by Mizuya: Irresistible udon and tempura in Tanjong Pagar

It's an open secret that if you wanna find good Japanese food in Singapore, Tanjong Pagar would be the place. Lots of Japanese food and restaurants can be found there because Japanese expats like hanging around there, especially 100am mall.

In this post, I am gonna review a new udon restaurant which just opened around 2 months in Tanjong Pagar, its name is Tempura Udon by Mizuya.

They are located at Orchid hotel, which is a spot that has stretches of popular Japanese restaurants such as Keisuke Tonkotsu King and Teppei.

As the name suggests, Tempura Udon by Mizuya specialises in soup-based udon and tempura.

counter seat

This is the counter view. The restaurant is not very big, probably can seat around 20 plus people.

They have an extensive choice of udon sets, from vegetarian-friendly to seafood lovers. This is the first time I have seen a snow crab leg on a tempura basket.

The Ordered Dish

It was a big portion udon set. I like how they present the udon set, as classy and feels premium like a high-class restaurant.

A bowl of udon soup

I will start it off with the udon first. Whenever we think of udon noodles, we always visualise them to be thick, fat and chewy. However, that was not the case for Tempura Udon by Mizuya. The udon they use the size is as normal as Chinese yellow noodles but with the thickness intact.

Udon noodles with Seaweed

I notice the udon noodles are a bit flat when I took them with my chopsticks. When eating the udon noodles, it was a very flowy and smooth sensation. Along with the soup, the udon noodles are flavourful and chewy yet feel light when eating.

Tempura Udon by Mizuya uses 2 types of seaweed on their udon, Wakame and some slime form of seaweed. Pair it with the udon noodles to enhance the flavours on it.

A basket of fried tempura items

Next, we go to the tempura portion. It includes asparagus, mushroom, baby corn, 2 pieces of prawns, chicken, salmon and white fish.

tempura dipping sauce

Radish and garlic are inside the tempura dipping sauce, which is the first time I have seen it.

When eating tempura one of the main concerns I have is the batter, which a lot of restaurants fried too oily and have an oil smell. Tempura and Udon by Mizuya did this very well, the batter is light and crispy and not oily at all.

All the tempura items are very fresh and their natural flavours are allowed to shine without any added seasoning. The dipping sauce adds another layer of flavour to it.

Thoughts

finished meals

Udon is quite unappreciated in Singapore compared to ramen and this the probably the best udon and tempura I had in Singapore for now. the udon noodles were cooked perfectly. Tempuras are delightfully fresh and non-greasy, leaving you craving for more.

A small minus is the chicken is too bland as there is no seasoning on it, a little salt or pepper would be good for the chicken. But that doesn't stop me from visiting here next time.

Tempura Udon by Mizuya does have another stall named Mizuya just 2 stalls away, selling omakase at a wallet-friendly price.
